Annotations for Film/Video Content

My film/video piece is about my passion for exploring new cities, with a particular focus on the vibrant energy of London. I chose to film in a vertical format (9:16) to be in the style of short-form content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. To create a captivating experience, I combined both on-screen and off-screen sound. For off-screen sound, I added background music and a small clip of my voice introducing the video at the beginning. I chose an uplifting beat for the background music to create a fun, engaging vibe for the audience. For on-screen sound, I incorporated the natural audio of some clips, like the faint spray-painting noise of the graffiti artist, however, I wasn’t able to include these diegetic sounds in every clip.

To keep the video engaging, I experimented with multiple camera angles and movements, attempting to create a fun and upbeat tone. Looking back, I would have liked to incorporate more on-screen sound, maybe even by filming myself speaking in parts of the video. To add on, this could have enriched the atmosphere and made the video feel more personal.

Annotations for Web Content Creation

My posters capture my passion for travel and what it specifically means to me. They focus on three key aspects; exploring the world, spending time with family and learning about different cultures. I chose London, Barcelona, and Paris to present these themes. For London, I emphasised its vibrant energy by editing photos of the Shard and London Eye together to demonstrate the city’s bustling atmosphere. To me, Barcelona symbolises family, shown through the images of the beach and family being together. To represent culture, I chose Paris and the Louvre, emphasising art as it is home to the world’s most renowned gallery.

My inspiration:

I took inspiration from these artsy, cartoon-like travel posters. I created my own in a unique, monochromatic style. I adjusted the image threshold to remove colour and combined multiple photos to create the final results. The bold monochromatic palette enhances structural details and directs focus to key elements without overwhelming the viewer. Originally, the coloured versions felt chaotic, but the black-and-white approach simplified the visuals, making them more focused and striking. This allowed me to convey the essence of each city while creating visually impactful posters that show my connection to travel.

Annotations for Audio

I wanted my audio piece to feel very colloquial, just like a regular conversation would be. As a result, I added background noise of a restaurant/cafe environment so it sounded like it was being recorded in a public space. I chose to do this instead of recording in a cafe as it was easier to manipulate and balance the two sounds, so they could go together smoothly and that our voices were clear. To add on, I made sure the language in the script was informal so that it would sound casual, rather than sounding too scripted to keep the colloquialness aspect. I chose to use one main recording instead of recording the intro and outro separately as it felt more natural and I was happy with the final take I ended up using. I used chill, upbeat background music to fade in and out of my audio as I thought it worked well with the theme and rhythm of the conversation. I did think about putting it softly in the background throughout the whole piece, however, I found it distracting and that it made it hard to hear and focus on the discussion.

Annotations for Creative Writing

This scripted dialogue continues from my last creative writing piece as it jumps to the first day back at university after Christmas. The character Grace is shown to be negative as she feels that she is stuck, whilst everyone else around her is moving forward. After hearing about her friend Emily’s beach holiday, she reflects on her own Christmas and looking back, it wasn’t as good as she remembers it. This depicts the nature of comparison and how detrimental it can be to our mental health, causing us to overthink, or to think we’re not good enough. The piece also highlights what it’s like to grow up as Grace’s childhood friend Claire is now busy with her boyfriend, whilst her brother is going out with his friends instead of staying in with family. These are some ways in which I wanted to demonstrate what it’s like to be a young adult, where everyone is at different stages of life. This dialogue should serve as a reminder that everyone’s progression through life does not need to be compared and is in fact good enough already.
